Priesters van het Heilig Hart van Jezus / Priests of the Sacred Heart

Loop je langs de Prinsesstraat? Houd dan even halt bij nummer 33. Hier was het Provincialaat van de Vlaamse Provincie van de Priesters van het Heilig Hart van Jezus. Ze hadden er vlakbij (in de Blindestraat) een opvanghuis voor daklozen en mensen in een crisissituatie. Dat was in lijn met de traditie van de congregatie. De stichter, pater Leo Dehon (1843- 1925), was als kapelaan in Saint-Quentin in contact gekomen met de uitgebuite en onderbetaalde arbeidersbevolking en werd als snel voorvechter van sociale rechtvaardigheid. De leden van zijn congregatie stuurde hij het veld in met de woorden: “Gij zijt de toortsdragers van het heilig vuur… Gaat naar de volkeren, gaat naar de mensen, gaat … en leert de zielen de liefde van Jezus’ Hart kennen.” (De dienaar Gods Pater Leo-Johannes Dehon, Leuven, 1957, p.9)

Are you walking through the Prinsesstraat? Then stop at number 33. This used to be the provincial seat of the Flemish Province of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Nearby (in the Blindestraat) they had a shelter for the homeless and people in a crisis situation. This was in line with the teachings of the congregation. Its founder, pater Leo Dehon (1843-1925), had as chaplain in Saint-Quentin come in contact with the exploited and underpaid workers and quickly became a fighter for social justice. He sent the members of his congregation into the field with the words: “You are the torch bearers of the sacred fire … Go to the people, go to men, go  … and make the souls acquainted with the love of Jesus’ Heart.” (De dienaar Gods Pater Leo-Johannes Dehon, Leuven, 1957, p.9)
