Kan liefde voor altijd zijn? Misschien is het wel mogelijk in vier eenvoudige stappen.
1. Neem een hangslot.
2. Kerf de naam van je geliefde en je eigen naam in het staal.
3. Klink het slot vast aan een openbaar gebouw.
4. Gooi de sleutel weg. (Maar niet in de Schelde of de haven! Vuilnisbakken staan dichtbij.)
Hangsloten verschijnen al eeuwenlang in publieke ruimtes. Maar in de 21e eeuw kregen ze een romantische betekenis aangemeten. In de roman Ho voglia di te (2006) van de Italiaanse schrijver Federico Moccia verzegelen de jonge hoofdpersonages hun liefde door een gegraveerd hangslot aan de Romeinse Ponte Milvio vast te maken. Dit stadsritueel reist de wereld rond. Van Rome tot Seoel, van Parijs tot Taiwan, van Keulen tot New York: liefdesslotjes vind je overal. Ceri Houlbrook (2020) maakte een lijstje van maar liefst 500 zulke locaties, over 65 landen, waar liefdesslotjes in massa’s bij elkaar hangen.
In de oude stadshaven van Antwerpen bevindt zich een unieke verzamelplaats voor liefdesslotjes. Het is een kunstwerk dat de liefde in al haar vormen viert. De Antwerpse interieurarchitect Bart De Beule ontwierp de Liefdesslotjes/LoveLocks in 2012: het is een beeld gemaakt van staalgaas rond een groot hart.
Vergeleken met andere plaatsen waar spontaan liefdesslotjes zijn gaan hangen, moedigt deze Antwerpse installatie geliefden aan om hun romantische beloften hier vast te maken. Terwijl veel andere steden de oorlog hebben verklaard aan liefdesslotjes, groeide LoveLocks uit tot een populaire toeristische attractie en een must-see voor geliefden die halt houden in Antwerpen.

Can love last forever? It might be possible in four easy steps. Take a padlock, engrave your name and the name of your beloved on it, attach it to a public structure and throw away the key (but not in the river. Be kind to the environment, and use a garbage can).
The origins of the practice of attaching padlocks in public spaces are ancient and varied. Since the beginning of the 21st century, however, it has taken on a romantic significance. In Federico Moccia’s novel Ho voglia di te [I want you] (2006), the young characters sealed their love by affixing a padlock engraved with their engraved to the Ponte Milvio. Since then, this urban ritual has become a popular custom. From Rome to Seoul, from Paris to Taiwan, from Cologne to New York, such ‘love locks’ have quickly spread to all continents. Finally, while other city administrations have declared war on the illegal gatherings of padlocks, LoveLocks fits into the urban setting, becoming a tourist attraction and a must-see for lovers passing through Antwerp.
